Commemorating June 6th – I-RSS Supports London Youth Education Initiatives

Last month, I-RSS was approached to provide consultation and editing support to the Youth Coalition Combating Islamophobia (YCCI) in their Islamophobia education packages for school classrooms. It was our honour to support and uplift these remarkable Muslim youth as they transformed their very real grief and trauma into meaningful action in combating Islamophobia. For more information on their other initiatives for June 6th, please visit ycci.ca. Read on for more information on the education packages and click the images to download their PDFs below.

The Islamophobic events – the killing of the Afzaal family – that took place on June 6th, 2021 in the city of London, Ontario, left a deep wound in the community. Like many faith groups in Canada, Muslims are diverse in language, culture, ideologies, and socio-economic status. However, when preyed upon through the eyes of bigotry, xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia, often those who identify with the faith are homogenously mistreated, and marginalized. These educational packages are designed to equip teachers seeking to educate their students with an understanding of the June6th terrorist attack on the Afzaal family. These packages ask students to examine and interrupt their own unconscious biases and form real allyship with those on the receiving end of anti-Muslim hate.
